Manager of Winemaking and Viticulture
Steve James is as close to a ‘man of the earth’ as you can get. After graduating with a Diploma of Applied Science Horticulture, specialising in viticulture, Steve packed his bags and set off to travel, taste and explore his way through the great wine regions of Europe.
From the outset, Steve focused on vineyard uniformity, vine balance and careful vineyard management. This has allowed the vines to become more adept at reflecting the individual blocks. It also ensures the depth, purity and complexity of the fruit improves immeasurably as the vines mature. In 2008, Steve was honoured with the Margaret River Wine Industry Association’s inaugural Viticultural Excellence Award. The judges highlighted his dedication to sustainability and superior fruit production.
Appointed Manager of Winemaking and Viticulture in 2009, Steve has championed the close collaboration between winemaking and viticulture which lies at the heart of Voyager Estate’s success.
As a lover of the great outdoors, Margaret River suits Steve to a tee. When not in the vineyard, Steve can often be found at the beach; swimming, surfing, diving, fishing, walking the dog or playing with his three young sons.
